How does spray tanning work?
Your body is sprayed with a solution that contains a certain percentage of DHA (DiHydroxyAcetone), a colorless sugar which reacts with the amino acids in the dead layers of your skin and over a period of a few hours goes brown - just the same as an apple does when you have bitten it!
Is spray tanning safe?
Yes! It does not contain any harful ingrediants.
How long does a spray tan last?
Your body constantly 'sloughs off' dead skin cells. Spray tanning only affects the outer skin layer, so as your skin cells are naturally shed, the spray tan will fade. Your tan should last 5-10 days, typically 7 days, but longer if you look after your skin by moisturizing every day.
Can anyone get a spray tan?
Most people are suitable to have a spray tan. We suggest that those with severe asthma or with very sensitive skin refrain from spray tanning. However, if you are unsure, please contact us.
Is spray tanning messy or smelly?
No. The technician will set up a spray tan booth in your home. The HVLP sprayer produces a very precise spray and any overspray is caught in the booth. The solution has some odur, example: vannilla, coconut and macadamia.
What preparation do I need to carry out for my spray tan?
You should exfoliate well the day or night before your tan. This promotes an even coverage and lengthens the duration of your tan by removing dead skin that would otherwise flake off. If you shave or wax, this should also be done at least 8 hours before your tanning appointment. Do not wear deodorants, moisturizers, make up or any other preparation on your skin on tanning day as these can act as a barrier to the tanning solution.
What should I wear for my spray tan?
You can wear as much or as little as you like.
For men we would suggest dark swim trunks, boxer shorts or underwear, sorry guys no nudes.
For women, a dark bikini, dark bra and underwear, g-string or you are perfectly welcome to have your tan topless or nude and many people do. (We have disposable bra's and underwear if you would like to wear them)
For after your appointment, wear dark, loose fitting cotton clothing and undergarments. The tanning marker washes out of most fabrics, but it will stain nylon, rayon, leather, and wool so plan accordingly.
Will I go orange or streaky?
No, absolutely not! Orange-ness is the result of tanning pills, older tanning agents and excessive spraying. A professional spray tan with modern tanning agents avoids this, and streakiness is caused by improper application and too much solution being applied this is why you should always let a professional apply your tan. Some of our tans can be layered on depending on the desired colour.
What do I do after my spray tan?
-
Wear loose dark clothing and do not shower for at least 6-8 hours as this can remove some of the tan before it has had a chance to develop.
-
The first night, it is best to wear pajamas or baggy loose clothing (do not sleep in silk sheets as these may stain)
-
When you do first shower, you will notice some brown staining in the water. Do not panic! This is just the marker dye washing off, revealing your tanned skin underneath. Let the water run over your skin, no rubbing and no soaps.
-
Avoid soaking in the bath as this encourages the sloughing of dead skin cells and will fasten the fading of your tan
-
Avoid hot tubs, saunas and swimming pools as chlorine will hasten the tan fading. Exsessive sweating will also lessen the life of the tan.
-
Moisturize every day (preferably twice) in order to keep your skin and tan in tip top shape.
You must remember to moisturize at least one to two times daily to maintain the best result of a spray tan. Applying moisturizer at night before you go to bed offers the best result.
If your skin looks patchy this means you need to exfoliate! Your skin is shedding dead skin that is visible because it is tanned with DHA. To even this out take a shower (not a bath - this will create more patches if not remove your tan altogether) and exfoliate these areas gently until it evens out. Moisturize afterward. All our tans have been designed to fade evenly however everyones skin is different.
If your skin looks cracked or lizard like -- You are not applying enough moisturizer. And if you are moisturizing once a day, step it up to twice a day.
